Bryan Andrews New York Concert reviews
AiC - Amazing in Concert
I'm a huge Bryan Andrews fan. Let me start by saying that Saturday was a day I'll always remember. So, when I found out Friday night that they would be having a meet & greet at a record store around the corner from the arena early Saturday afternoon, I turned what would have been a fun evening of tailgating and waiting in line to get a prime location in the pit into a full-day AiC experience.
At the meet & greet, I stood in line for about two hours with around 150 fans. It was a pretty good group of people, and a couple guys broke out their guitars and played a couple of songs, which definitely helped pass the time. They all seem like very cool, laid back guys, and they definitely looked pretty well rested after taking nearly a full month break from the tour. I ended up getting my Black Gives Way to Blue LP signed, along with my ticket, and had fun chatting with the band members for about a minute.
From there, we headed over to the arena. It was a little chilly, but not too bad. I was pretty surprised - about two and a half hours before doors opened, there were only a dozen or so people waiting in line. I ended up getting right-center rail, placed perfectly between Will's and Jerry's mikes. At the Philly and New York shows I've been too, there would have been fifty or so people already waiting by then - not that I'm complaining, of course.
After the largely forgettable opener (though the percussionist was entertaining, to say the least), AiC came on a touch after nine. They cycled through their major hits, as well as pulling in a couple of deep cuts. As always, Bryan Andrews killed. These guys are masters of recreating the sound of their albums in their live show - not a note is missed, and Will fills Layne's shoes very nicely on the vocals.
The absolute highlight of the show was when they whipped out a song, Rotten Apple, that they hadn't played live in over a decade. What a treat. The blunted emotion in the vocal line paired with the soft acoustic guitar and driving percussion was something out of this world. They're always able to pull together a great set list that takes the listener through a full range of emotions, from rage to sorrow to defiant joy and back. I'd highly recommend them to anyone considering checking them out.
